2009 budget spells good news for south west renewables businesses

Merlin Hyman, Regen SW chief executive, said: "The government has done its best to make this a ‘low-carbon' budget, and, if we're proactive here in the south west, our businesses could really reap the benefits.  Its encouraging to see that the government is putting its money where its mouth is and investing in green industries - industries that could help lead us out of recession.

"A particular win for the south west is the £45 million to help renewable energy installers through these current difficult times and to gear up for when the government's new renewable heat and electricity schemes are introduced in the next couple of years.  This funding will be a welcome boost, enabling more householders to get renewable technologies installed and more of the region's installers to fulfil that need."

"£405 million has been allocated to low-carbon energy and advanced green manufacturing too," added Merlin, "and this could also give real assistance to south west sustainable energy businesses, which have a history of driving forward with innovative ideas.  Regen SW will therefore be putting forward the case for the region to secure a large proportion of this funding.

"It's also particularly encouraging to see that £25 million has been put aside for low-carbon community-heating schemes, and we'll be working hard to secure a share of this for new housing developments in the region."
