Biomass

The South West Bioheat Programme

Regen SW manages The South West Bioheat Programme which aims to stimulate the bioheat industry through increasing the number of woodfuel systems on the ground, supporting fuel suppliers and providing recognised training programmes across the region. It will generate an investment of £8 million on capital equipment, the creation of 48 new jobs and a sustainable market for local woodfuel worth an estimated £2.4 million per year. The programme is funded with £650,000 from the South West RDA and £10,000 from the Forestry Commission.

Although the Bioheat project does not complete until March 2008, the region is already seeing early success with over 50MW of new Bioheat proposals going through development, assessor training for consulting engineers being launched this August and the creation of new woodfuel companies to support growing demand.

Regen SW can provide support by both helping the local authority to install biomass technologies at their own sites and in setting up mechanisms which encourage further deployment of biomass use in their area.

Awareness Raising

  1. Biomass focused presentations and events to Local Authority members and officers. This may also include demonstration visits to relative installations to improve first hand knowledge.

Encourage uptake

  1. Mechanisms to encourage increased biomass technology deployment within the local authority area. For example, this may include help drafting a biomass implementation policy which would require all new developments to fully consider the biomass option as the primary energy solution.
  2. Local authorities may also wish to investigate the potential of the creation of a local tree station to aggregate woodfuel and supply into the immediate area.

Project Specific Support

  1. Training for site assessors, architects, M&E engineers and procurement officers in designing and purchasing systems.
  2. Pre-feasibility and championing support for local authority sites keen to install biomass systems.
